Patchwork & Quilting overview
On retiring from formal English teaching I decided that it was time to broaden my skills in the textile arts. On an Open Day at Missenden Abbey in Buckinghamshire I happened to walk into Barbara Weeks’s Patchwork & Quilting Certificate class. I saw the creative buzz, the huge variety of techniques, the dual focus on Craft and Design and was hooked . I decided there and then to enrol on the next Level 3 Patchwork & Quilting course! It was an extremely steep learning curve, but three years later I was to my amazement awarded the City&Guild’s Medal for Excellence!
After being selected to showcase my completed work at the 2015 Festival of Quilts, I was chosen as the winner of the Quilters’ Guild's City & Guilds Bursary, to be spent on furthering my textile studies in any way I saw fit. What a wonderful opportunity!
I decided to use part of the money to fulfil one of my long-held dreams of visiting Iran, and there to be inspired by the patterns and designs of ancient Persian and Islamic culture. My passion for trekking had previously provided rich material for my Nepal inspired textiles at the 2015 Festival of Quilts. Now Iran beckoned, fortunately at a time when the country is very gradually opening up, so the prospect of travelling there felt less daunting than in previous decades. The creative outcome of my travels was displayed in my Bursary exhibition at the 2016 Festival of Quilts.
